Correlation between Coral Reef Condition and the Diversity and Abundance of Fishes and Sea Urchins on an East African Coral Reef

چکیده
Coral reefs are one of the most diverse marine ecosystems, providing numerous ecosystem services. This present study investigated relationship between coral reef condition and diversity abundance fishes, on a heavily fished East African at Gazi Bay, Kenya. Underwater visual censuses were conducted thirty 50 × 5 m belt transects to assess fishes. In parallel, 25-m length each same was recorded with photo-quadrats community structure benthic characteristics. For statistical analyses, multi-model inference based Akaike Information Criterion used evaluate support for potential predictor variables fish diversity. We found that genus richness negatively correlated macroalgae, whereas cover positively both herbivorous invertebrates (sea urchins) family richness. Similarly, appeared mainly invertebrate abundance, although no correlates could be identified. very low, but it appears that, contrary some locations coast, sea urchin not high enough having negative influence assemblages. Due increasing threats reefs, is important understand among components overfished such as Bay.

Spatial and temporal distribution of larvae of coral reef fishes in northern Red Sea, Egypt
The larval community of coral reef fishes in the Red Sea was studied in coastal and offshore sites to determine the effects of the exposure to waves and currents and the distance from the shore in structuring the larval fish community. Plankton sampling from inshore and offshore sites and the exposed and sheltered sides of the reefs resulted in the collection of 2048 larvae representing 49 diff...

متن کاملCoral reef growth in the galapagos: limitation by sea urchins.
The regular echinoid Eucidaris thouarsii is a conspicuous omnivore on coral bottoms in the Galápagos. Unlike Eucidaris in Panama and mainland Ecuador, Galápagos Eucidaris are large and abundant and graze heavily in the open on live corals day and night. These differences are probably due in large part to more intense predation by fishes on mainland compared with island urchin populations. An as...

Feces and distal gut contents were collected from three coral reef fish species. Bacteria cell abundances, as determined via epifluorescence microscopy, ranged two orders of magnitude among the fishes. Mass-specific and apparent cell-specific hydrolytic enzyme activities in feces from Chlorurus sordidus were very high, suggesting that endogenous fish enzymes were egested into feces. Denaturing ...
متن کاملNatural bounds on herbivorous coral reef fishes
Humans are an increasingly dominant driver of Earth's biological communities, but differentiating human impacts from natural drivers of ecosystem state is crucial. Herbivorous fish play a key role in maintaining coral dominance on coral reefs, and are widely affected by human activities, principally fishing. We assess the relative importance of human and biophysical (habitat and oceanographic) ...
